Altec Lansing Life Jacket Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Altec Lansing Life Jacket Boasts of many amazing features, In this article, we will be looking at some of those features. We all love music, so let’s do this together, we’ll have a review of these amazing speakers.

Altec Lansing Life Jacket

The new $149.99 Life Jacket 3 is an update to Altec Lansing’s Life Jacket Bluetooth speaker lineup.

The rugged, waterproof Life Jacket 3 floats, and can project audio at reasonably high volumes, making it well-suited for outdoor use.

Altec Lansing also includes a solid array of accessories, including a mounting kit for bikes.

It’s too bad, then, that the digital signal processing (DSP) employed by the speaker is dialed up to such a high level.

You don’t need to be a sound snob to notice the dynamics of any given track getting squashed as the volume seems to dramatically rise and dip.

A more subtle approach to DSP would have resulted in a very different listening experience, but as things stand, the Life Jacket 3’s greatest gifts are its rugged design and useful accessories, while its audio performance is merely decent.

Design and Technicalities of Altec Lansing Life Jacket

Measuring 4.7 by 8.6 by 4.2 inches (HWD), the rugged, rubber-lined Life Jacket 3 is available in dark gray, with blue, teal, or red highlights.

If you’ve seen the Life Jacket 3’s smaller sibling, the Mini Life Jacket 3 ($110.58 at Amazon), they are virtually indistinguishable except for size—the Mini is obviously smaller and uses smaller drivers, but their contours and layout are nearly identical.

Both speakers are rated IP67, meaning they are waterproof up to 1 meter. And as mentioned, the Life Jacket 3, like its sibling, can also float.

Behind the speaker grille, the Life Jacket 3 employs dual 2-inch neodymium drivers and a rear-firing passive bass radiator.

On the top panel, the Life Jacket 3 has a power button that doubles as the play/pause control—hold it into power up or down, tap it to control playback.

You can also answer calls or end them with this button, or tap it twice to go into Voice mode (which summons Siri on iOS devices).

The plus and minus buttons work in a similar manner—tap them to adjust volume (this works in conjunction with your mobile device’s master volume level), hold them in to navigate tracks.

Unfortunately, it’s relatively easy to accidentally skip a track when you mean to adjust the volume if you’re not paying close attention.

Various other combinations of the buttons being pressed allow you to pair the speaker with another Life Jacket 3 and assign left and right channels to each, or go into pairing mode.

(The Life Jacket 3 can pair with up to three devices so you can listen to one, and take calls from another.)

The top panel also acts as an NFC pairing zone for compatible devices.

Altec Lansing Life Jacket: The Performance

Given the nature of this speaker, the first thing to talk about is just how indestructible it really is.

Although we didn’t drive a car over the speaker to see if it will keep working, we did drop it on purpose from tables, from the bed, and lobbed it across the room.

After all this, the speaker looked no worse for the wear, though of course, a week’s (careful) rough use isn’t going to match up to a full year of keeping this strapped to your bike and going off-roading.

We then immersed it in a tub of water and played music, and the speaker worked fine – the Bluetooth connection didn’t get affected by the water either, so you could really use it like that at the pool.

That, coupled with the fact that it is dust-proof, means that this speaker sounds like the perfect accessory for any Goa-trip that you’re planning.

Attach it to your rented bike, and listen to music on the sand and the surf with impunity.

The catch is that the LifeJacket 2 is barely average as a speaker. It’s loud – it’s a very loud speaker in fact and can realistically be used outdoors at a picnic or at a get-together in your garden.

But it’s also very flat; the bass in muffled and bleeds, and the sound has no real richness.

It’s actually not too bad for watching movies – you won’t get subtle notes, but the vocals are clear, and so you can follow dialogues while the action will get loud.

But for listening to music – and we tried a number of different tracks from different genres – these speakers weren’t very impressive, considering the price you’re paying.

Final Verdict

The LifeJacket 2 is an average-sounding speaker, but it doubles up as a phone charger, and it’s pretty much indestructible.

It’s definitely not for everyone, but if we had the kind of lifestyle where it would make a difference, then we would probably really enjoy owning the Lifejacket 2.
